What Are the Differences Between Lighted Push Button Switches and Non-Illuminated Push Button Switches?

Understanding the differences between lighted and non-illuminated push button switches can help in selecting the right switch for specific applications.

Visual Feedback

Lighted push button switches provide visual feedback, allowing users to quickly identify the switch’s status, while non-illuminated switches lack this feature.

Aesthetic Appeal

Illuminated switches often add an aesthetic appeal to the design, enhancing the look of the control panel or device.

Generally, lighted push button switches are more expensive than their non-illuminated counterparts due to the added complexity of the illumination feature.

Power Consumption

Illuminated switches consume additional power for the lighting element, whereas non-illuminated switches do not have this consumption.

Application Specific

Lighted switches are often preferred in

applications where visibility is essential, such as in dark environments or where quick identification is needed. Non-illuminated switches might be chosen for simpler applications where illumination is not necessary.

Lighted push button switches offer versatility, aesthetic appeal, and functionality across various applications. Understanding their types, wiring, applications, and how to choose the right one can help in implementing them effectively in different scenarios. Whether it’s an industrial control panel, a marine application, or a home appliance, these switches provide reliable control with visual feedback. By considering the factors discussed in this guide, users can make informed decisions in selecting and using lighted push button switches for their specific needs.

How to Troubleshoot a Lighted Push Button Switch?

Inspect the Wiring

If the lighted push button switch is not working as expected, inspect the wiring. Loose or damaged wires can cause malfunctioning. Refer to the wiring diagram for proper connections.

Check the Power Supply

Ensure that the power supply to the LED and the switch is within the required voltage range. A mismatch can cause the LED not to illuminate or the switch not to function.

Test the LED

If the LED is not lighting up, test it with a multimeter or connect it to another power source to check if it’s functioning.

Examine the Mechanical Parts

Sometimes, the mechanical parts inside the switch may get stuck or wear out. Inspect the switch’s mechanical components and replace if necessary.

Consult the Manufacturer’s Guidelines

If troubleshooting doesn’t resolve the issue, consult the manufacturer’s guidelines or contact their support. More details can often be found on the product page.

How to Maintain a Lighted Push Button Switch?

Regular Inspection

Regularly inspect the switch and its wiring for any signs of wear, damage, or loose connections. Promptly address any issues to prevent malfunction.

Clean as Needed

Depending on the environment, dust and dirt may accumulate on the switch. Clean it using a soft cloth and non-abrasive cleaners to maintain its appearance and function.

Monitor the LED

Keep an eye on the LED’s brightness and color. If changes are noticed, it may be a sign of wear or a power issue.

Follow Manufacturer’s Recommendations

Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for maintenance, including specific cleaning agents, inspection intervals, and replacement parts.

Keep Spare Parts

Having spare parts, such as additional switches or LEDs, can be helpful for quick replacements if an issue arises.

Are Lighted Push Button Switches Safe for Outdoor Use?

Check the IP Rating

When selecting a lighted push button switch for outdoor use, check the IP (Ingress Protection) rating. The IP rating indicates the level of protection against dust and water. An IP67 rated switch, for example, offers protection against dust and temporary water immersion.

Consider the Material

Choose a switch made of materials that can withstand outdoor conditions such as UV rays, rain, and temperature changes. Stainless steel and certain plastics are commonly used for outdoor applications.

Assess the Application

Consider the specific outdoor application and the environmental conditions it will be exposed to. Selecting a switch designed for outdoor use ensures durability and proper functioning.
